Snowy winters

I’ve never really thought much about snowy winters, having always lived in Texas, California, or the Southeastern U.S.  In Western North Carolina, we do get snows, but they don’t last that long —usually 2-3 days at the most, shutting down our mountain city.

But we did want to experience what it was like here in Quebec in winter.  Normally, snow is business as usual, but it was interesting to hear from my friends at the English library in Rimouski this afternoon that this last storm was a 100-yr one (I’d heard something similar on CBC radio last night).

We wouldn’t really know, of course.

We hunkered down in our warm house as the snow came down, almost a foot and a half, we think.

Our nice neighbors sent us an email the night before, warning us  — don’t go out, you might not be able to get back.  And sure enough, the major highway nearby closed down from late afternoon one day to mid-day on the next.  Good advice.

And I’m familiar with the snow/ice coming drill — in WNC, we stock the house with staples ahead of a winter storm.  It didn’t seem that evident, here, as far as grocery stores shelves looked, but I had added plenty of provisions, in any case.

Our local village grocery was open yesterday, regardless, as we tested my car’s winter worthiness.  Thankfully, it’s been great!

  1. Wowzer. I grew up in St Louis, MO. We had our snowy days, but nothing like this.
