Embracing winter (and the cold)

view from upstairs.
I'm finishing this post as I'm listening to Spanish-language music on a wonderfully-eclectic Quebec radio station that my buddy discovered.  We started with Baroque classical music this morning, moving through French language songs, seemingly from the 30s to 50s, with an English-language song mix from 4-5 pm, also all retro songs.

So delightful, after our years of traveling to South America, Central America, and Mexico, to hear Spanish-language songs, described by a French-Canadian moderator.

I never thought I’d enjoy these cold, snowy days and the winter light as much as I have.  I was worried about feeling cooped up, and the short days, and lack of activity.

None of these worries materialized, as I’ve been out skiing almost every day with my buddie (although frequently exhausted afterward, it’s always been fun).  I’ve gone out to volunteer at the local English-language library, I still go more frequently to the grocery, too, by habit, perhaps more than locals — life goes on, here, in the midst of snow.

Our neighbor mentioned to Tim this morning, as they were shoveling out the snow behind our cars, that this is unusually snowy for Le Bic again this year.  Hmm. It’s seemed like a lot of snow since we arrived here, on Jan. 7th — the drifts outside the windows are high now.  And more snow is expected.

We scooted out for an afternoon skiing excursion in Parc national du Bic this afternoon.

Wonderful.

    1. It’s been a revelation — I really did imagine we’d be indoors by the fire after dark a LOT, but it’s now staying light until almost 5. The days get markedly longer here — more perceptibly than at higher latitudes.
