Special places in the world

There are so many remarkable places to visit on our planet.

I'm reminded again of the North Island of New Zealand, by Alison Young's interesting posts on her Te Araroa journey.

We had a great time on the North Island last winter and we still plan to go to the South Island -- a month wouldn't have done justice to both.

We've been fortunate to be able to travel to (and hike in) many places in the world.  Sometimes they've been more natural destinations;  sometimes, more cultural ones.

High points:

Torres del Paine, Chile
Patagonia along the Carretera Austral, Chile
Sapa (in Northern Vietnam)
Ecuador (in the Central Highlands)
The Canadian Rockies (Banff and Jasper)
The Southwestern coast of Ireland (Dingle and Beara peninsulas)
Summer meadows in the Austrian alps in Obersdorf

And the Gaspe Peninsula, in Quebec, which mirrors the high elevation vegetation where we live in the Southern Appalachians during most of the year and where we're fortunate now to have a small historic house and garden.

It's a magical place.

We'll see what it's like with snow this January.

Our neighbors sent us a lovely video of snow falling around our small house up there.

Lovely.

Our snow gear, including hybrid snow shoe/skis are ready, along with snow pants, insulated mittens, and snow boots.

Yikes, for us warm climate folks.

  2. You have seen so many wonderful places. And it looks like you have a lot more to come. Good for you.
I absolutely loved New Zealand. It was so beautiful and peaceful. We traveled there with 36 middle school kids. It was a wonderful trip. We had a home stay as did all the students. So nice to see the home culture. We stayed in a Māori cultural center and loved the people. Our tour guide took us out on his day off while the kids were on a home stay. We are still friends from this trip in 2000.
