Being at home in Asheville

I've rather thrown myself back into Asheville with a flurry of landscape consultations, programs, etc. along with meetings and going to a visioning session around the "Pit of Despair" this afternoon.

This is a space less than a 10 minute walk from our house, and one that we pass by on almost every walk downtown.

It's directly across from the US Cellular Center and the Basilica, and anchored by two historic apartment buildings and the Pack Library.  Its future has been contentious for over two decades.

When we first started to come to Asheville three decades ago, after moving to the upstate of SC, this space was anchored by a mildewy parking garage (no longer in use).  Finally the City took down the garage, but the space has been in limbo ever since.

I truly hope that the inspirational landscape design firm that the City hired (finally) will come up with some sort of good proposal.  I'm hopeful, as I've heard the head of the firm speak (at a symposium last spring) and he's a visionary.

So we'll see.
