A last view of our Southern Appalachian garden

I’d been admiring this Piedmont rhododendron throughout the week, but just managed a reasonable photo this morning, when it was in shade, with morning light.  At this point, the Fraser magnolia next to it is doing well, putting on exceptional new growth.

Both of these are relatively recent inhabitants of this spot;  it’s a tough one, as it’s subject to deluges from the clogged drains in the 4-unit historic apartment next door.  (Needless to say, the gutter looks about as old as the apartment!)

But the Eastern hemlock has flourished below this spot, over the years, and the Kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel), too.

And down the slope - the left edge of the upper woodland garden was beautifully green.Woody10ncWoody10nc

  1. Great photos. I really got a better sense of the Southern Appalachinan flora during our visit to the Smokies. Azaleas and Rhododendron are so common there, but pretty much absent in our area.
