Silene virginica (Fire Pink)

We've had Fire Pink in the past, but as a short-lived perennial, it doesn't stick around indefinitely.  The one we've planted recently is right by the front door, putting on a show -- wonderful!

I like to tell people in programs and presentations that I think gardening is a relatively price-worthy activity.

It seems to me that a beautiful perennial that flowers for several weeks is definitely a better investment in joy than an ordinary lunch out, not to mention the cost of a dinner downtown, although both have their merits, especially in a great food-centric city like Asheville.

So, this Silene is definitely earning its keep, so to speak, and by collecting its seeds, perhaps we can extend its presence over the next few years.

  1. Love this plant, but it won't grow for me. Indian Pink, on the other hand, does very nicely.
