The magic of snow

An unusual December snow found us out at Biltmore Estate this morning, trying out our new "ski-shoes" -- Altai Hok short skis, along with our winter boots, snow pants, etc.   Ha, we're relatively inexperienced winter folks, so this was great practice!

With new winter tires (with amazing traction), we (at least me) were much more confident driving my sturdy Volvo XC-wagon through our barely cleared winter streets this morning.  We certainly wouldn't have ventured out without the new tires!

Happily, the snow was perfect along the trail from Antler Hill Village out to the lagoons -- a favorite walk, but it turned out to be an excellent snow path for our hybrid skis.  Lovely.  No one else was on the path, so we broke fresh snow.  I've never used snowshoes, but these short skies seemed quite nice -- gliding and gripping, in turn.  It was exhilarating and warmth-producing -- a good full-body workout, although that wasn't the point.

A couple from Montana, parked near the lagoon, came back on their snowshoes and looked a bit like they were trudging through the 3-5 inches of snow that we had overnight.  Our ski-shoes seemed to keep on top of the snow much better.

So, I'm totally encouraged about Quebec in January.  OK, it'll be normally 15-20°F colder than it was today, but it was lovely to be out in the snow.
