Red squirrels
Red squirrels are resident in Quebec year-round. Much smaller than Eastern gray squirrels, they’re an endearing part of our visits to the nearby parc national du Bic (in addition to their frequent visits to our bird feeders).
We don’t mind their predations on our bird seeds very much, as they seem like part of the habitat here.
This winter, we’ve got one or two that have tunnels under the snow, accessing our black oil sunflower seeds, which have been dislodged by black-capped chickadees (and the squirrels’ own acrobatic efforts).
These blurry photos show their activity.
Here’s evidence that s/he has also found the heated “bird” bath that we recently installed as a fresh water sound.
How fun to be able to watch the clever critters enjoy your yard.
ReplyDeleteThey’re a lot of fun!
DeleteA little red squirrel runs up and down the wall of our house almost every day. In summer s/he chatters endlessly at anyone who dares to invade her or his territory; in winter, s/he brings pine cones or anything tasty s/he lays her/his paws on and sits beside the kitchen door, enjoying the meal. I love watching the antics!
ReplyDeleteOne of "ours" has discovered that s/he can dangle from the wooden bench to drink water from the heated bird feeder -- quite acrobatic.
DeleteThat I'd like to see!
