Remembering Italy last April

We had a wonderful month in Italy last April thanks to HomeExchange.  Listening to Frances Mayes this evening talking about her recent book "See You in the Piazza," at Malaprops, a venerable independent book in downtown Asheville, reminded me of the delights of Italy.

Although Italy doesn't necessarily speak to me as a place of the spirit in terms of the landscapes that I've visited (except for the Dolomites, many years ago), it is an amazing country, with the most remarkable vegetables and food, combined with an exuberance for living that Mayes described beautifully in her talk this evening (and undoubtedly, she describes evocatively in her book).  She read from the preface as part of her talk. A remarkable piece.

The exuberance of Italian life was what attracted her 30 years ago to take a risk on an old house in Cortona, after all.

She's a delightful speaker and it's telling to me that she's still writing (and traveling around Italy) in her late 70's.
