From winter to spring and back again

Driving from the mountains of Western North Carolina towards the coast (and Charleston), first, you drop down the Blue Ridge Escarpment (rather sharply) through the Green River Gorge and down the "Saluda Grade" of the railroad that was built through the escarpment with great effort and some loss of life.

What was remarkable to me at this time of year was the transition from winter to spring.  The greening became more and more apparent as I drove down through the Piedmont, the Sandhills, and into the Coastal Plain, where spring was in full swing.

Azaleas, red buds, and dogwoods were in flower on the coast.  Carolina jessamine, in flower, illuminated the canopy along the interstate in the Piedmont.

And everywhere, there were the light green colors of new spring leaves.

Here's a post I made about spring greening on April 6, 2014.

An image from our Piedmont landscape at that time, a bit further along in spring, but still with dogwoods and sassafras in flower.
