Looking forward to fresh snow

A few days ago, we briefly thought about leaving today, in a spell of clear weather.  But we decided not to, as there was snow in forecast for this week, and we wanted to ski a bit on fresh snow again before we leave.

I'm quite sure we didn't think the biggest snowstorm so far this winter was coming on Wednesday, however.  That's been a developing storm.

The predictions are currently for 8-12" of snow -- with a couple more inches overnight.

Today's skiing excursion in the park was icy, with a fun excursion out into the meadow near the warming hut on the La Portage trail. Breaking the icy crust to the snow below with our Altai Hok skis was great, much nicer than the packed granular icy snow on the main trail.

The views, as usual, were wonderful.

Tomorrow, I'm pitching a winter walk instead of skiing.  We have heavy snow boots after all, that we're using with our short skis.  I think I'd rather walk with good soles, than slip around on our short skis!

The current temperature in Asheville is 58°F.  Here it's is 5°F.  I'll never think about cold in the same way again.

We've learned it's all about base layers (today I had two lower ones underneath my snow pants, with three layers, above, plus my micro-down jacket and windproof jacket.  Perfect.

  1. Have you tried snowshoes, Lisa?

    1. No, we haven't., although maybe we'll try them at some point. We got the Altai Hok hybrid ski/snowshoes as an in-between option, and they've been great. Walking on the icy path this afternoon, I'm not sure if snowshoes would have been better than walking. Geez, there was even a runner who came by at one point; everyone else was walking, aside from an ice-fishing skier that we saw in the distance.

    2. Yaktrax are another useful tool in the winter footwear toolkit. They make those icy stretches a little more navigable.

  2. Here the snow has all melted away and the temps have crept back up over freezing. Things could still change, though - snowstorms have been known to strike in April. What a great stay you are having in Quebec.
