A family motto
My great-grandfather, along with his 4 brothers, owned a clothing store in Ellinwood, Kansas.
Their mother had left Kulmbach, Germany in the mid- 1850's, with them, to avoid the risk of their being drafted -- at least that's the family story. She was a widow, or had quickly become one, so they made their way to Kansas, to a community largely founded by German immigrants.
As adults, the brothers ran the Wagner Bros. Clothing Store.
My dad somehow had some of the wrapping paper from the store after his father and mother were gone, and passed on pieces to my sister and me.
It's telling. "Quality has no Substitute" is printed on the wrapping paper. It might as well be a family motto.
