Special things

I was reminded today as I sent a thank-you note to a local potter, of how beautiful things make a difference.

I've already posted this on FB, but a blog post becomes an easily accessed record.

We’ve enjoyed our wonderful plates and bowls from Mangum Pottery, (https://www.mangumpottery.com) in nearby Weaverville, for many years. They’re a perfect size and color for our small house here, where we have open shelving.

Over time, finally five of the plates had developed cracks - most had been reused for decorative uses, even after I’d bought several more a couple of years ago. We were finally down recently to three plates, hardly enough for the meals at home era.

So yesterday, we made a welcome excursion to somewhere different (only over to Weaverville) to replace them, thinking we might get a discount on the cracked plates, but remarkably the owners replaced them all, saying the glaze had been porous, causing this problem, until they reformulated it two years ago.

Well, that was delightful and unexpected, but we told him the story of a visit with probably our second Golden, Mocha, who swished his tail on something that broke. It could have been our 3rd fellow, who’s now twelve (it was after the new kitchen hutch and cabinets were put in, hmm, when was that?

We were mortified with the damage, even though the young employee then, said no worries.

We ended up buying a beautiful and expensive vase that was way beyond our price point then, but that we’ve totally enjoyed having in our Asheville house for the last decade plus.

I was glad to write a thank-you to Magnum’s creators this evening, along with sending this photo.

This is in our main floor kitchen/living space in our small house, so we enjoy it every day, along with the lacquer paintings we brought back from Vietnam (Hoi An) over a decade ago.
