Ecuador

A friend reminded me this afternoon of Ecuador and the wonderful town of Otavalo, in the Central Andean Highlands.  It's a highland town, famous for its market, but more impressive was the nearby lake: Laguna de Cuicocha and the farther north preserve of El Angel.

We visited there long ago;  an image of Cajas National Park has been my screen saver now for well over a decade.

A magical place, and the rest of our visit to the Central Andean Highlands -- well, wonderful.

That trip was a touchstone.

At the Laguna de Cuicocha, near Otavalo.

  1. Very beautiful! I visited Ecuador for a week when my son lived in Quito during college. We spent a couple of magical days in the cloud forest watching hummingbirds.

  4. I visited Otavalo with husband and children in the late 1990s. Climbed up to the Wymper Hut on Chimborazo, and at 5000 meters looked out on the world. Unforgettable.
