An afternoon in Burlington, VT
Taking advantage of a trip to visit Glen Villa in the Eastern Townships on Saturday, I thought I’d go visit Shelburne Farms, too, after a stay with my Dad and his wife outside of Quebec City. Shelburne is not too far across the border in Vermont, and near the vibrant university city of Burlington, VT, where I found lodging in a older Victorian house split up into flats (mine was being run as an Airbnb.
The pedestrian area is filled with tourists in summer; Burlington is on Lake Champlain, a excellent vacation destination for travelers throughout the NE, I’d think. I enjoyed a loop along the waterfront, before returning to the downtown district for dinner. Sitting at the bar in the Farmhouse Tap and Grill to eat had me wishing for a quieter spot, but the outdoor garden setting had been steamy, even at 6:30 pm. Highs of 93°F are expected tomorrow here. Hmm.
Of course, in Burlington, there’s a lot of eco-hipster things to appreciate, as in many college towns in North America, as well as the glossy tourist elements. (The fellows behind me while I was eating dinner at the Farmhouse Tap were talking about their business deals, drinking Martinis and Negronis.)
This great planting outside the Coop was remarkable!
It was a short walk to the downtown pedestrian mall, apparently a visionary transformation back in the 60’s, according to this sign.

Well, that’s not going to faze me as a resident of the Southeastern U.S., but it will be hot nevertheless. It was 51°F this morning at our house in Le Bic, Quebec, this morning in contrast, and downright cool, too, this morning at the cottage on the St. Lawrence River that my Dad and Nancy are staying for the summer.

The City Market Coop was quite a nice place to visit — I bought some local apples and a local hard-boiled egg (!), a stick of cheese, and some milk for my coffee in the morning. (The provisions at Airbnb’s are totally variable. This one has a bit of coffee, and a coffee-maker, but nothing else).
These scenes nearby and poster are telling of this place.
