Sense of place

I love feeling at home, surrounded by things that seem meaningful.  Fundamentally, it's the natural world that grounds my sense of place, but it's equally what's inside.  We were remarkably fortunate to bumble upon this historic cottage, along with the previous owner's collection of Quebecois antiques, from this region.

At one point, he printed these business flyers (the original painting is above the entry to the kitchen) and had a robust business in items large and small.

When we bought (for an additional price) what turned out to be not just the special pieces of antique furniture (on Daniel's handwritten list, they were all armoires, as far as I could make out his spider-like handwriting), but it turned out to include largely the rest of the contents of the house.

Happily, we acquired lovely vintage canning jars -- Canadian-made.  There are two companies represented in our jars, in both the ones that were here, and ones that I've acquired last summer and this. Crown and Jewel are the two canning jar companies represented - with glass lids and zinc fasteners.

I love using them for storage.

It makes me happy to use these vintage jars for pantry storage in the old pine cabinet in the kitchen. They keep nuts, rice, beans, dried fruit, coffee, etc. perfectly.
