Who knew bears like lettuce?

A duplicate post from my Natural Gardening blog.  Bears are part of our landscape here.

Who knew bears liked lettuce?

After dinner this evening, we suddenly saw the large grizzled neighborhood bear, who has an urban bear collar, in the front of the house through the glass storm door.  The glare through the door didn't make for a good photo, but....

He was checking out the closest raised bed, and much to our surprise, started eating a young butter crunch lettuce transplant, planted a week or two.  Hmm.  He munched that one (it had been a LOT bigger) ignoring the kale and chard nearby, then moved to another lettuce transplant in an adjoining bed, munching it down, too.

Rather remarkable to have such a large omnivore roam by, with herbivore interests.

  1. Lisa, that is quite interesting and maybe seemingly comical. They have never bothered our raised beds. This behavior would have surprised me as well.

We did see a coyote on our trail cam two nights ago.

    1. Surprising, indeed! How does Woody respond?

    2. If Woody sees one of the bears, he'll bark, usually if they're in the back and we're on the porch, but he didn't notice this fellow, as he probably was snoozing!
